What if my child doesn't behave during our portrait session?

What if my child doesn’t behave during our portrait session?

This is a question parents ask me a lot… Or I have parents that leave the studio after a session and are thinking it the entire ride home.

Do not worry, I’ve got you.

I opened my photography studio 6 years ago and in that time I have worked with lots of small children.  Prior to opening the studio I was a kindergarten teacher for 11 years and well… I legit have my degree in babies and children.  I am also a mom.

I get it, kids will be kids.

The space and what to expect

My studio is set up to be comfortable for you and your family.  I have an area with toys that are safe for your kids to play independently during your portrait session.

I spend the first few minutes of each session getting to know your child and letting them settle into the new environment.  Then we get to work and have some fun.

Let’s have some fun

When it’s time for the session I am very silly, and find the things that make your child giggle laugh and on occasion sit still for a few photos. Your child may not want to sit with their sibling for a photo right away.  I will not make them do something they do not want to do.  We move through the session and can always revisit a pose as your child settles more into the environment.  Sometimes what didn’t work in the beginning of the session works a few minutes later.  It’s also important to capture your childs true personality, and sometimes those photos become the most favorite portraits.

A few suggestions for things you can do before the session are…

  • Have a meal or a snack before you arrive. A full tummy usually makes for happy humans.

  • You can always pack your outfits and change at the studio if you want to keep them fresh and clean.

  • Keep the session low key, “Were going to have some fun today, and get some photos together!”

  • Then have some fun, and enjoy your family… I will do the rest.

I have even run into my house to get my golden retriever Monty, he really knows how to make a new best friend anytime, anywhere.

Keep your eye on the prize

As most of the kiddos that have been to the studio before know, I have a prize box! It’s got toys, stickers, and even some lollipops.  I am not above bribery, because even adults need something extra special to work for sometimes.

We’ve got this

Portrait sessions can be a lot of planning and outfit scouting and time juggling.  You may be feeling a bit stressed and then you start to worry about how your child is behaving… don’t fret.  Once you arrive at the studio you can feel confident that you are in the best hands.  So I encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy your family while I capture some of your special moments together.

I can’t wait to see you in the studio soon.
